Laser technology finding a place in dental care

by | Jul 1, 2021 | Dental Tips

Across the health care field laser technology has made a difference in a wide variety of procedures. The benefits in dentistry also are proving that lasers can be a great option for their ability to reduce pain, speed healing, and reduce the presence of bacteria.

Laser technology has multiple dental applications from removing or reshaping tissue to aiding in whitening. While they have not replaced traditional dental procedures, many dentists are now offering laser treatments in cases where they can be a great benefit for the patient.

Dental lasers include soft-tissue lasers, used on soft tissue areas of the mouth including gums, and hard-tissue lasers, used to cut hard tissues and even replace a drill. Because lasers harness light energy, they actually cut and vaporize tissue and can act as a heat source, making them extremely efficient in many dental procedures.

Lasers in dentistry

  • Addressing gum disease – Lasers can remove diseased tissue as well as bacteria that can lead to further gum issues.
  • Removing cavities – A hard tissue laser can act as a drill removing decay and preparing your tooth for a filling.
  • Testing for cancer – A laser can efficiently remove a lesion or small piece of tissue needed to perform a biopsy.
  • Teeth whitening procedures – Lasers work with whitening agents by activating them and speeding up the whitening process.

Lasers may also aid in a patient’s comfort and healing during root canals and can reduce canker sore and cold sore pain. From wisdom tooth discomfort to filling repair, dental lasers can make a difference in your dental experience and quality of life.

While laser treatment does have limitations – they can’t fill a tooth, prepare teeth for a bridge, or eliminate the need for anesthesia for all procedures – there are many benefits, including:

  • Reducing the pain related to some procedures so that anesthesia is not needed
  • Lessening swelling and bleeding for most soft tissue treatments
  • Allowing more retention of healthy tooth during decay removal
  • Providing a more comfortable visit with less anxiety for the patient

Prevention is still best

Nothing compares to preventive maintenance when it comes to your oral health. At Thomas Dental, we stress that your hygiene habits and dental check-ups are your best means of protecting your teeth and gums from decay and disease.

  • Brush carefully after meals.
  • Floss every day.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash regularly.
  • Schedule dental cleanings, check-ups, and x-rays according to your dentist’s recommendations.

Research into laser dentistry continues to pursue opportunities to improve healing, reduce pain, and provide a more efficient dental experience. While dentists acknowledge lasers are not proven to be better than traditional treatment, many are making an investment in this option for patients who can benefit from this treatment.

At Thomas & Associates, we continually update our procedures to offer you the latest and best in dental technology, including restoration, pediatric care, orthodontics, and cosmetic dentistry. Call for an appointment today and learn how we can improve your smile.
