Don’t skip your dentist appointment due to COVID

by | Dec 1, 2020 | Dental Tips

It may seem too risky at this time to enter a dentist office for a routine cleaning, but you may be taking a greater risk with your dental health by not going for that visit. Strict protocols and precautions have made your dentist visit safe and there are many dental concerns that should not be neglected.

Even if you are attempting to limit your exposure to others, the following conditions should be examined and treated immediately by your dentist.

Swollen, bleeding gums

Many people experience some minor bleeding when brushing, but more severe bleeding and swollen, sensitive gums may indicate gingivitis or periodontitis, which can lead to serious problems with your gum tissue, teeth and surrounding bones. These infections are more serious if you have diabetes or another condition that compromises your immune system. Your dentist can both treat your gum disease and provide guidance to prevent it.

Broken teeth or fillings

A broken tooth can cause pain and difficulty eating, drinking or speaking. Likewise, a broken or lost filling, which has repaired a broken or decayed tooth, can cause pain and difficulties. Both conditions also can lead to infection and should be addressed immediately.

Injuries to the teeth or face

An accident or trauma to the mouth or face can knock teeth out of alignment, cause fractures or knock a tooth out completely. If you have experienced any injury or trauma to the face, it is important to see a dentist immediately. X-rays can often find fractures that are not visible, and a lost tooth may be saved if addressed quickly enough.

Severe tooth or mouth pain or swelling

If you are experiencing tooth or mouth pain, it is best not to wait until it is unbearable or keeping you up at night. Pain or swelling can indicate decay, an infection, a problem with your jaw, or other issues that can be readily treated if addressed quickly.

There are many things you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy, thereby limiting the length of your dental visits.

  • Brush regularly, that is every morning and evening, and after eating sugary or sticky foods.
  • Floss carefully every day, cupping each tooth to loosen plaque at the gum line.
  • Use your soft bristle toothbrush to clean your tongue as well.
  • Skip the sugary foods and drinks and replace them with water.
  • Avoid smoking and use of tobacco products.
