Q: Dentist, General Dentist, or Family Dentist – What is the difference?

A: As far as dental skills and procedures, there is no difference. The title on your dentist’s dental school degree may read “dentist” or “general dentist” but the training and education are the same. Likewise, a family dentist will have received the same training and provide the same services as a general dentist. The only difference will be that a family dentist will provide care for all ages while a general dentist will focus services on adults and possibly older teens.

Q: What are the most common procedures provided by a general dentist?

A: General dentistry is focused on maintaining your oral health. Dental care you can expect at your general or family dentist will include:

Preventive services, such as regular teeth cleaning, exams, x-rays, and sealants as needed.
Restorative services, such as fillings; crowns, bridges, and other solutions for broken, loose or missing teeth; dentures; and treatment for gum disease. Some general dentists also provide more advanced procedures, such as root canals and dental implants.
Cosmetic services, such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers.
Other health concerns related to the mouth, including cancer, oral infections that can exacerbate diabetes and cardiovascular care, and sleep apnea.

Q: How much does a root canal cost?

A: Many general dentists have received additional training to perform root canals when needed. When this is not the case, your dentist will usually refer you to a trusted oral surgeon for the procedure. Your out-of-pocket cost for a root canal will vary depending on which tooth needs the procedure and whether you have insurance, ranging from $200 to more than $1,000. Be aware that you will need a crown following the procedure, which is not included in this cost.

Q: Can a general dentist fit me with braces?

A: Many general dentists have received additional training to provide braces or Invisalign to straighten crooked teeth and improve your smile. For more complex bite or jaw issues, such as malocclusions, bone growth problems, or jaw pain, you may want to discuss with your general dentist the need for a specialist.
