Dentures

If you've lost several, or even all, of your natural teeth, dentures might be the solution for you. Missing teeth can not only make eating a challenge, it can effect your speech, overall health and even your appearance. Without proper support, facial muscles tend to sag, giving a person an older appearance.

There are several types of dentures. A conventional full denture procedure can take several months to complete. Any remaining teeth must first be removed and the tissue needs time to heal properly. Once healed, the denture is made and placed in the patient's mouth.

An immediate denture is made and inserted after any remaining teeth are removed. But first the dentist will take a variety of jaw measurements during a preliminary visit. Next, models of the patient's jaw are made to insure a good, custom fit. Immediate dentures make it possible for the patient to avoid any toothless time during the healing process.

It's important to note that even with full dentures, the patient must continue to practice good oral hygiene. Gums should be brushed each day, along with the tongue and palate before inserting the dentures. A soft-bristled brush is good for this regime to help stimulate blood circulation and remove plaque.
